I am making this post sticky for the time being. Please scroll down for regular programming.

Here we go again.

The Indian government seems to have adopted the tried and true policy with respect to freedom and rights = squishing any semblance of ze moste evile of all evils ‘FREE SPEECH’.

How do you expect me to react when slowly but surely blogspot, typepad and geocities(huh?) seems to be getting blocked in India? It started with Reliance Infocom, MTNL and Spectranet blocking blogger, but to my utmost horror I see that Airtel and Sify has dutifully followed suit as well.

For crying out loud, this is the biggest example of blind moronism and banal retardation I have ever come across. The last time I checked, India was supposedly a democracy.

From The Great Indian Mutiny:

Two sources, one inside the Government of India and the other kind of inside/outside have confirmed to the Mutiny, that ISPs are being instructed to ‘control’ access to blogspot. It seems that some blogs are being used by some terror units (read SIMI) to communicate.

Wonderful. But the fun doesnt end there.

Now I know you are not going to believe this, so I’m going to quote what she said, ‘This operation is limited to certain parts of India. Bloggers in Andaman, Nicobar and Lakhsadeep islands are not affected.’

Fantastic! People, move to Port Blair! You have your solution!

And here is an example of the courteousness and gallantry of the Indian government (specifically CERT-IN),

(via)

Somebody must have blocked some sites. What is your problem?

by the ever gracious Gulshan Rai, director of CERT-IN.

If you are facing a similar problem, please go here and add your ISP to the list of ISP’s being blocked.

You ARE entitled to your rights under the Right to Information Act 2005 and I beseech you, please apply under this act to divine the real reasons (however moronic they may be) behind this block. Go here for a concise, step by step description of how it can be done.

In the meantime, for those of you having trouble viewing blogger and typepad blogs, go here for more info as to how you can bypass the ban.

The Indian press seems to have picked up the lead (finally), go here to check it out.

The popular international blogs have picked it up as well: Boing Boing, Digg, Michelle Malkin and Silicon Beat.

I’m having a weird sense of deja vu. Didnt the government go through the same brouhaha in 2003 when they blocked the whole of yahoo groups, when in reality all they wanted to do was to shut down a forum for Naga extremists?

Also go here, here, here and here for up-to date news on the issue.

Update: Here’s a list of phone numbers including Mr.Gulshan Rai’s number and all his co-workers/sub-ordinates etc etc.

Start calling. Please.
